That is how many hours we have left before we start the long Thursday of travel. The plan is to leave for the airport at 10 am Taipei time Thursday morning. Which is 9 pm Wednesday night central tome. If everything goes according to plan we will touch down in Chicago at 11:30 pm Chicago time. Thanks to Hank W. we should have a warm ride waiting for us when we land.

Tonight we area heading over to the ministry house to spend the evening catching the vision with the international workers here. Supper, prayer and worship are on the agenda. Shooting a couple of promo videos as we go to excite the western great lakes students for the future.

Looking forward to the future….

Temple in Taipei

There is a weird mixture of beliefs in Taiwan. In logic ancestor worship and reincarnation don’t seem to jive (a word i dont use every day).  However her logic in what they worship doesnt have to make sense. Although completly logically Christianity doesn’t make sense. An all powerful God dying for this frail humanity. Not sure that makes any logical sense either. But there is no contradiction and maybe that is what struck me today.

Behind the main buddha in the temple was a row of other gods i watched as one enslaved person to the next went from idol to idol offering prayers and offerings in hopes to appease or please each one. Which one is only their best guess.

Took my first imodium of the trip not bad considering.  I am also a uncle again. Congrats to my sister on the birth of Safia. There are benifites of being off the time zone by 13 hours.

Tomorrow morning our time (night time in the USA) we will be meeting as youth pastors to plan the partnership and trip. Please pray. Thanks!

It is interesting, maybe thats not the word. Not interesting but exciting. Although that doesn’t seem right also. As we wander through Xiemn district led by Chris Odell it is exciting to see the passion and hope he has. We hear his plans and God’s plans as we walk. So many opportunities that are available. Not the opportunities that we normally think of for missions trips. No building projects, no VBS, no slum ministry; but instead a movie to be made, a concert to be provided, a conversation to have.

Right now i sit in movie park where to my right is a building that will show and promote films that bring light. To my left is an open building that could house a church, a ministry or what ever it is that God has called to be done.

There is a great love for the district by the people who live and work here at the envision site.

More of Bangkok

It is surprising how, after traveling to a different place for a number of days, long it seems to be when you stay at one place for two nights. But just so we dont get to comfortable we have a 3 hour plane ride to the another country this afternoon.

Yesterday the expereience at the slum ministry was one I do not think I was prepared for. We parked on the street, unloaded the van and i thought this isnt too bad. Then we took a left. We walked in a place where every square inch was  covered by poverty. It was a maze of buildings as far as could be seen. Narrow walk ways lead you through the maze. Each home was no larger than most bathrooms. People laid on the floor, sat on chairs or stood on the hard floor. We walked pass a paved open area fenced off from the rest of the village. Inside kids were playing soccer. The building was vacant and rundown. The sign still read Santa Barbara mission, but the mission had long ago been abandoned. One of our group wanted to play soccer but he was kicked out of the game much like, i imagine, the mission was kicked out of the village. “We dont need your handouts and sympathy,” they seemed to say. We need people to come and bring us the hope of Christ. Not the hope that you can end poverty cause we are happy here this is our field, but what about hope beyond the chains of Buddhism, do you have that?

Then we headed back in the van to the Siam Center. We were dropped off in a new location away from the center to walk to the sky train. We passed countless middle aged men with young asian escorts. My fist balled in anger as I thought of that young girls dad and mom. I wanted to punch the men. I knew that would not be the right way to do things. Passed a brothel. Loaded on the sky train and headed from the slums to the ritz. BMW, Lexus, Armani, and the like replaced the run down shacks from the slums. Yet the need was still there. The need of Christ. The need to be set free from slavery. And wouldn’t it be grreat if, through reaching the ritzy, they as the thai people went to reach the poor? So it was not the rich americans coming to save but the Thai people themselves having been set free that want to see their brothers and sisters set free also?

Thats the heart and passion of what Siam Center Envision site will be.

Thanks for reading. More to come….

Bangkok

Last night, today and tomorrow morning we have spent in Bangkok. It has seemed like the pace has slowed. We will sleep two nights on the same bed. The travel has been smooth but it is also nice to be in the same place. I guess we did have a tuk tuk driver take us out to the “lake,” but we survived that; thankfully.

Moving from Poipet to Bangkok is quite a shift. Bangkok is a massive sea of people. People from everywhere. Today at the market we saw people from all parts of the globe.

Tonight we will head back to Siam Square which is a cultural center for the city of Bangkok. It is also where two missionaries will be landing in two months to start an ENvision site. Tonight we will prayer walk through the area asking God to open doors and lead the way for the missionaries.

We will also walk through the impoverished areas of the city. I think impoverished is the wrong word, poor, slums, destitute and flat out in need.

More to come…
